Day 2 took place at Kilbirnie Park
This was the first defence of the Hallyburton Johnstone Challenge Shield since Wellington took it from Auckland in 1935/36. A challenge from Otago in 1936/37 had to be cancelled due to an outbreak of infantile paralysis.
