There were three umpires on the third day due to a dispute about the performance of JC Davis and a request by AR Holdship for a change of umpire. It took the intervention of CH McKinney (Hon Sec of Auckland CA) and the assertion that the NSW cricketers would have no financial claim against the Wellington CA for the guaranteed gate money to bring an end to the dispute and allow the game to continue.
J Searle, who was the original wicket-keeper, had split a finger in the North Island's first innings and was unable to field (Collins acted as substitute fielder) and so took up the duties of umpiring.
